There is less there than meets the eye. On Prime Minister Clement Attlee, to President Truman, in 1946. When Truman defended Attlee (‘He seems a modest sort of fellow’), Churchill replied ‘He’s got a lot to be modest about.’
Occasionally he stumbled over the truth, but hastily picked himself up and hurried on as if nothing had happened.
