Upgrading the speaker in my Fender Deluxe Reverb

I've owned and sold a number of amps: Hot-rod Deluxe and De-Ville, Twin-Amp, Orange Tiny Terror & Rockerverb and the Riviera Pubster. They've been: too quiet, too loud, too heavy but mostly I just didn't like the sound. I bought my Goldilocks amp, the Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue, on 18/04/2013. It's had been my go to since.

I was happy enough but a number of commentators said the stock speaker (12" Jensen C12K) was not very good. I thought it was OK at lower volumes but lacked definition at higher volumes. I listened to Youtube speaker comparisons and while I could hear slight differences, nothing overly dramatic. On watching amp techs continually swapping speakers I decided to try a speaker change. I was astounded with the outcome. The right speaker has transformed my amp and reduced amp weight by 2 lbs.

The options considered were:

  • WGS ET 65
  • WGS G12C
  • Eminece Allisandro
  • Vintage / Veteran 30
I decided on WGS ET 65 based on the number of positive reviews from other speaker upgraders.

WGS 12" ET65 - 65 Watts

The ET65's creamy lows blend with tight midrange and sparkling highs for some of the best tones ever created. This speaker is for classic rock, country, and blues. Upgrade from your Celestion™ G12-65.

Possibly the best WGS speaker combination we can recommend is the ET65 paired with a Veteran 30™. Your cabinet will sound more full and colorful than you ever imagined. If you are putting together a 4x12 cab, we suggest either an "X" pattern or the ET65s on top of the Veteran 30's.

The WGS ET 65 is based on Heritage Series G12-65

Originally created in the late 70s using more modern materials and techniques for a higher power handling the G12-65 is widely regarded as one of the best guitar speakers ever produced for use in a 4×12 cabinet. With its fast attack and tightly controlled low end the G12-65 had become a firm favourite with hard rock players by the early 80s. The precisely tuned mid-range and crisp defined top-end contribute to an aggressive crunch sound that punches through the mix while the mid-range warmth and detail give weight and depth to single notes.
